Upadeshasahasri 18.148

18.148 Shankaracharya

nābhāvā bhedakāḥ sarve viśeṣā vā kadācana | nāmajātyādayo yadvatsaṃvidaste'viśeṣataḥ ||

Absences can never be what distinguishes, nor can they ever be particular features. So, just as with names, universals and the like, your cognitions [would remain] without distinction.

Meaning today and context

The end of a technical refutation: a theory built only on negations cannot explain why one experience differs from another.

Shankaracharya concludes this line against the Buddhist: absences cannot distinguish anything or be particulars, so on the Buddhist view cognitions themselves would have no distinguishing features.
