18.149 Shankaracharya

pratyakṣamanumānaṃ vā vyavahāre yadīcchasi | kriyākārakabhedaistadabhyupeyaṃ dhruvaṃ bhavet ||

If you want perception or inference in everyday dealings, then it must certainly be accepted together with the distinctions of action and its factors [knower, means, object].

Meaning today and context

Advaita does not deny ordinary life: at the practical level there really is a person who knows, a way of knowing and something known. The deeper truth is not a reason to stop dealing sensibly with the world.

Shankaracharya tells the Buddhist that if he wants perception and inference to work in everyday life, he must accept the distinctions of action and its factors: a knower, a means and a known.
