Upadeshasahasri 18.15

18.15 Shankaracharya

vākyārthapratyayi kaścinnirduḥkho nopalabhyate | yadi vā dṛśyate kaścidvākyārthaśrutimātrataḥ ||

[Opponent:] No one is found who has understood the meaning of the sentence and is [thereby] free from suffering. Or if someone is seen [to be free from suffering] merely from hearing the meaning of the sentence,

Honest seekers notice this: understanding the teaching does not seem to end suffering by itself. The objection is fair and Shankaracharya will answer it.

An opponent who holds that hearing 'Thou art That' is not enough and that repeated meditation (prasaṃkhyāna) on it is required appeals to observation: people who have understood the sentence still suffer.
