Upadeshasahasri 18.151

18.151 Shankaracharya

rūpādīnāṃ yathānyaḥ syādgrāhyatvādgrāhakastathā | pratyayasya tathānyaṃ syādvyañjakatvācca dīpavat ||

Just as the grasper is other than colour and the like, because they are grasped, so there must be something other than the cognition [that knows it]; and [the cognition is other than its objects] because, like a lamp, it reveals them.

Meaning today and context

What you can observe is not you: colours are seen, and thoughts too are seen. The one who sees both can never be found as one more thing in the list.

Shankaracharya gives the core inference: just as the grasper is other than colours because they are grasped, so something other than a cognition must know it; and the cognition, which reveals objects like a lamp, is other than they are.
