Upadeshasahasri 18.154

18.154 Shankaracharya

sa coktastannibhatvaṃ prāksaṃvyāptiśca ghaṭādiṣu | yathālokādisaṃvyāptirvyañjakatvāddhiyastathā ||

And that [help] was stated before: [the cognition's] taking on its likeness. And the pervading of pots and the like [by the intellect] is like [their] pervading by light and so on, because the intellect reveals [them].

Meaning today and context

The mind seems conscious because it borrows the light of awareness, the way the moon shines with the sun's light. Knowing this, you need not take every thought as the final word about yourself.

Shankaracharya answers: the witness's 'help' to the mind, already explained, is that the mind takes on its likeness; and the mind pervades pots and other objects as light pervades them, because the mind reveals them.
