ālokastho ghaṭo yadvadbuddhyārūḍho bhavettathā | dhīvyāptiḥ syādghaṭāroho dhiyo vyāptau kramo bhavet ||
As a pot standing in the light [is lit], so would it be when mounted on the intellect. The pervading by the intellect is the pot's mounting [on it]; in the intellect's pervading there would be a sequence.
Meaning today and context
The mind takes things up one after another; that is why attention moves and jumps. This step-by-step movement belongs to the mind, as the next verse says, not to awareness.
Shankaracharya explains the analogy: a pot standing in light is lit; in the same way an object 'mounted' on the intellect is known. The intellect's pervading is the pot's coming into it, and in this pervading by the intellect there is a sequence.
