Upadeshasahasri 18.158

18.158 Shankaracharya

adhyakṣo'hamiti jñānaṃ buddhereva viniścayaḥ | nādhyakṣasyāviśeṣatvānna tasyāsti paro yataḥ ||

The knowledge 'I am the witness' is a determination of the intellect alone, not of the witness, since [the witness] is without particulars, and since there is nothing beyond it.

Meaning today and context

Even a spiritual idea about yourself, such as 'I am pure awareness', is still a thought. The point is not to hold a new self-image but to stop needing one.

Shankaracharya makes a subtle point: even the thought 'I am the witness' is a conclusion reached by the intellect, not by the witness itself, which has no features and has nothing beyond it to know it.
