Upadeshasahasri 18.159

18.159 Shankaracharya

kartrā cedahamityevamanubhūyeta muktatā | sukhaduḥkhavinirmoko nāhaṃkartari yujyate ||

If freedom were experienced by the agent [the ego] as 'I [am free]', [that cannot be]: release from pleasure and pain is not possible for the 'I'-maker.

Meaning today and context

The ego that feels pleased and hurt will always swing between them; it cannot become permanently free. Freedom is recognising that you were never only that ego.

Shankaracharya turns to freedom and suffering: freedom cannot be experienced by the ego as 'I [am free]', because release from pleasure and pain does not fit the ego, the 'I'-maker.
