dehādāvabhimānottho duḥkhīti pratyayo dhruvam | kuṇḍalipratyayo yadvatpratyagātmābhimāninā ||
The notion 'I am in pain' certainly arises from identification with the body and so on, just like the notion 'I have earrings' in one who identifies [them] with the inner Self.
This verse is about identity, not a denial of pain. It is never a reason to ignore an injury or illness, to stop treatment, or to harm oneself. If you are in pain or thinking of hurting yourself, seek medical help and call Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
Much suffering comes from fusing 'me' with what I have or what happens to my body. The earrings are worn, not you; in the same way the hurt belongs to body and mind, and you are its knower.
Shankaracharya explains where the feeling 'I am in pain' comes from: from identifying with the body and the like, just as someone says 'I have earrings' by mixing up his ornaments with himself.
