dāhacchedavināśeṣu duḥkhitvaṃ nānyathātmanaḥ | naiva hyanyasya dāhādāvanyo duḥkhī bhavetkvacit ||
In burning, cutting and destruction, the Self is in pain in no other way [than by identification]; for when one thing is burned, another is never pained.
This verse is about identity, not a denial of pain. It is never a reason to ignore an injury or illness, to stop treatment, or to harm oneself. If you are in pain or thinking of hurting yourself, seek medical help and call Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
The body hurts, and that pain must be cared for. Yet the one who knows the pain is not itself wounded; this can give a quiet steadiness inside even while the body is being treated.
Shankaracharya argues that pain from burning, cutting or destruction belongs to the Self only through identification, since when one thing is burned, something else never feels the pain.
