kuṇḍalyahamiti hyetadbādhyetaiva vivekinā | duḥkhīti pratyayastadvatkevalāhaṃdhiyā sadā ||
Just as 'I am the one with earrings' is certainly overturned by one who discerns, so the notion 'I am in pain', [which belongs] always to the mere 'I'-notion, [is overturned].
Meaning today and context
Just as you can take off an ornament and still be yourself, you can recognise a painful story about yourself as something worn, not as who you are.
Shankaracharya applies the earring example: just as a discerning person sees through 'I am the one with earrings', the notion 'I am in pain' is always overturned in the same way, since it belongs only to the 'I'-notion.
