Upadeshasahasri 18.165

18.165 Shankaracharya

siddhe duḥkhitva iṣṭaṃ syāttacchaktitvaṃ sadātmanaḥ | mithyābhimānato duḥkhī tenārthāpādanakṣayaḥ ||

If being in pain were established [in the Self], that capacity would have to be accepted as belonging to the Self always. [But] one is in pain through false identification; therefore the [opponent's] inference collapses.

Meaning today and context

If suffering were your very nature, you could never be free of it, yet there are moments when it is absent. That alone shows it is something that happens to you, not what you are.

Shankaracharya meets an objection: if being in pain were really established in the Self, it would have to be the Self's permanent capacity. But one is in pain only through false identification, so the opponent's inference fails.
