asparśo'pi yathā sparśamacalaścalanādi ca | avivekāttathā duḥkhaṃ mānasaṃ cātmanīkṣate ||
Just as [one sees] touch in what is untouchable, and moving and the like in what is unmoving, so through lack of discernment one sees pain, which is of the mind, in the Self.
Meaning today and context
Sorrow, worry and hurt are movements of the mind. We read them as facts about who we are, the way a passenger on a train feels the platform moving.
Shankaracharya explains how pain is seen in the Self: just as the untouchable Self seems touched and the unmoving Self seems to move, so through lack of discernment pain, which belongs to the mind, is seen in the Self.
