Upadeshasahasri 18.17

18.17 Shankaracharya

sadasīti phalaṃ coktvā vidheyaṃ sādhanaṃ yataḥ | na tadanyatprasaṃkhyānātprasiddhārthamiheṣyate ||

[Opponent:] Since, having stated the result, 'You are Being', a means to it must be enjoined, that [means] is accepted here as nothing other than repeated meditation, whose purpose is well known.

Meaning today and context

The opponent thinks every goal needs a method. Shankaracharya will reply that what you already are is not a goal to be reached.

An opponent who holds that hearing 'Thou art That' is not enough and that repeated meditation (prasaṃkhyāna) on it is required argues that once the result ('You are Being') is stated, a means must be prescribed, and that means is meditation.
