Upadeshasahasri 18.170

18.170 Shankaracharya

pratyagātmābhidhānena tacchabdasya yutestathā | daśamastvamasītyevaṃ vākyaṃ syātpratyagātmani ||

Likewise, through the connection of the word 'That' with [the word] denoting the inner Self, the sentence 'Thou art That' would be about the inner Self, just as [the sentence] 'You are the tenth'.

Meaning today and context

The vast reality called 'That' is not somewhere far off; it is pointed out as your own innermost self, as plainly as telling someone 'you are the one you were looking for'.

Shankaracharya continues: the word 'That' is likewise joined with the word for the inner Self, so the sentence 'Thou art That' is about the inner Self, like the sentence 'You are the tenth' in the familiar story.
