Upadeshasahasri 18.171

18.171 Shankaracharya

svārthasya hyaprahāṇena viśiṣṭārthasamarpakau | pratyagātmāvagatyantau nānyo'rtho'rthādvirodhyataḥ ||

Without giving up their own meanings, [the two words] convey a qualified meaning that ends in the understanding of the inner Self; therefore there is no other meaning that contradicts [this] meaning.

Meaning today and context

The teaching does not ask you to forget yourself or the world; it uses ordinary words, rightly understood, to point you to what you already are.

Shankaracharya states how the two words work: without giving up their own meanings, they together convey a specific meaning that ends in understanding the inner Self; so no other meaning contrary to this can be drawn.
