navabuddhyapahārāddhi svātmānaṃ daśapūraṇam | apaśyañjñātumevecchetsvamātmānaṃ janastathā ||

Because his mind was carried off by the nine, a man not seeing himself, who completes the ten, would want to know only himself [as the tenth]; so too people [seek] their own Self.

Meaning today and context

We count everything in our lives, people, roles, possessions, and still feel something is missing. Often what is missing is the one doing the counting.

Shankaracharya recalls the story of the tenth man: ten travellers cross a river, and the one who counts them counts only nine, forgetting himself. Seeking the missing tenth, he wants to know only himself, though he does not realise it; so too do people seek their own Self.
