Upadeshasahasri 18.173

18.173 Shankaracharya

avidyābaddhacakṣuṣṭvātkāmāpahṛtadhīḥ sadā | viviktaṃ dṛśimātmānaṃ nekṣate daśamaṃ yathā ||

Because his eye is bound by ignorance and his mind always carried off by desire, he does not see the Self, which is seeing itself and distinct [from all], just as [the counter did not see] the tenth.

Meaning today and context

When attention is always pulled outward by wanting, we never turn to look at the one who wants. Slowing down desire a little is what makes self-knowledge possible.

Shankaracharya explains why people miss the Self: their eyes are bound by ignorance and their minds carried away by desire, so they do not see the Self, pure seeing, distinct from all, just as the counter did not see the tenth.
