Upadeshasahasri 18.174

18.174 Shankaracharya

daśamastvamasītyevaṃ tattvamasyādivākyataḥ | svamātmānaṃ vijānāti kṛtsnāntaḥkaraṇekṣaṇam ||

Just as by [the words] 'You are the tenth', so by sentences such as 'Thou art That' one knows one's own Self, the witness of the whole inner instrument.

Sometimes one clear sentence from a teacher is enough to make us see what was always there. The Self is not produced by effort; it is recognised.

Shankaracharya concludes the analogy: just as the counter knows himself on hearing 'You are the tenth', so through sentences like 'Thou art That' a person knows his own Self, the witness of the entire mind.
