Upadeshasahasri 18.175

18.175 Shankaracharya

idaṃ pūrvamidaṃ paścātpadaṃ vākye bhavediti | niyamo naiva vede'sti padasāṃgatyamarthataḥ ||

'This word should come first in a sentence and this one after': there is no such rule in the Veda. The connection of words is by [their] meaning.

Understanding comes from grasping what is meant, not from fussing over the order of words. The same holds for any teaching.

Shankaracharya answers a Mimamsa-style objection about word order in 'Thou art That': in the Veda there is no rule that one word must come first and another after; words are connected by their meaning.
