Upadeshasahasri 18.176

18.176 Shankaracharya

vākye hi śrūyamāṇānāṃ padānāmarthasaṃsmṛtiḥ | anvayavyatirekābhyāṃ tato vākyārthabodhanam ||

For in a sentence, the meanings of the words heard are recalled by agreement and difference; from that comes the understanding of the sentence's meaning.

Before a profound sentence can transform you, its words must be clearly understood one by one. Careful study is not opposed to insight; it prepares it.

Shankaracharya explains how a sentence is understood: on hearing its words, one recalls their meanings by agreement and difference (anvaya-vyatireka), and from that the meaning of the sentence is understood.
