Upadeshasahasri 18.177

18.177 Shankaracharya

yadā nityeṣu vākyeṣu padārthastu vivicyate | vākyārthajñānasaṃkrāntyai tadā praśno na yujyate ||

When, in the eternal sentences, the meaning of the words is discriminated so that knowledge of the sentence's meaning may be passed on, then the question [against this method] is not appropriate.

Meaning today and context

Taking a teaching apart word by word is not doubting it; it is how its meaning is handed on from teacher to student.

Shankaracharya defends the method: when, to convey the meaning of the eternal Vedic sentences, the meanings of their words are being sorted out, an objection [to the method] is out of place.
