Upadeshasahasri 18.18

18.18 Shankaracharya

tasmādanubhavāyaiva prasaṃcakṣīta yatnataḥ | tyajansādhanatatsādhyaviruddhaṃ śamanādimān ||

[Opponent:] Therefore, for the sake of direct experience, one should meditate with effort, endowed with calm and the like, giving up whatever opposes the means and what it is to achieve.

Meaning today and context

Calm, restraint and steady effort do help the mind; the coming reply does not reject these, it only denies that they manufacture the Self.

An opponent who holds that hearing 'Thou art That' is not enough and that repeated meditation (prasaṃkhyāna) on it is required concludes: one should meditate with effort, endowed with calm and self-control, avoiding whatever hinders the practice.
