Upadeshasahasri 18.180

18.180 Shankaracharya

anvayavyatirekoktistadvivekāya nānyathā | tvaṃpadārthaviveke hi pāṇāvarpitavilvavat ||

The method of agreement and difference is taught for discriminating that [meaning of 'you'], not otherwise. For when the meaning of the word 'you' is discriminated, [the sentence's meaning becomes clear] like a bilva fruit placed in the hand.

Meaning today and context

Most of the work in self-inquiry is sorting out what you are not: the body, the moods, the roles. When that is clear, what remains is obvious, like a fruit in your palm.

Shankaracharya says the method of agreement and difference is taught only to discriminate the meaning of 'you'; once that is discriminated, the sentence's meaning is as plain as a bilva fruit placed in one's hand.
