Upadeshasahasri 18.182

18.182 Shankaracharya

tatraivaṃ saṃbhavatyarthe śrutahānāśrutārthadhīḥ | naivaṃ kalpayituṃ yuktā padavākyārthakovidaiḥ ||

When the meaning is possible in this way, the idea of abandoning what is heard and [assuming] a meaning not heard should not be imagined by those who know the meaning of words and sentences.

Read a text for what it actually says before inventing what it must mean. Honest reading respects the words in front of you.

Shankaracharya rejects a forced reading of 'Thou art That': when its meaning is possible in this straightforward way, those who know the meaning of words and sentences should not imagine dropping what is stated and supplying what is not.
