18.184 Shankaracharya

duḥkhyasmīti sati jñāne nirduḥkhīti na jāyate | pratyakṣādinibhatve'pi vākyānna vyabhicārataḥ ||

While the knowledge 'I am in pain' is present, [the knowledge] 'I am free from pain' does not arise [from it]. [It arises] from the sentence, for [that pain-notion], though it resembles perception, goes astray.

This is about self-knowledge, not a replacement for help. If you feel persistently low or hopeless, talk to someone you trust or a professional; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

You cannot think your way out of suffering from inside the belief 'I am a sufferer'. A truer view usually comes from outside the loop, from a teaching, a teacher, or someone who sees you more clearly.

Shankaracharya concludes: while the feeling 'I am in pain' is present, the knowledge 'I am free from pain' does not arise from it; it arises from the scriptural sentence, without fail, because the feeling of pain, though it looks like perception, is not reliable about the Self.
