Upadeshasahasri 18.186

18.186 Shankaracharya

samāptestarhi duḥkhasya prākca tadbādha iṣyatām | na hi duḥkhasya saṃtāno bhrāntervā dṛśyate kvacit ||

Then let its cancellation [by waking] be accepted as happening even before the suffering has come to its end; for nowhere is a continuing stream of suffering, or of the error, seen [once it has been cancelled].

Meaning today and context

When you wake from a nightmare, you do not wait for the dream-wound to heal; it is simply gone. Right understanding works the same way on the error behind suffering: it does not linger once seen through.

Shankaracharya completes the dream argument: when one wakes, the dream's suffering is cancelled at once, not after it has run its course.
