Upadeshasahasri 18.187

18.187 Shankaracharya

pratyagātmana ātmatvaṃ duḥkhyasmītyasya bādhayā | daśamaṃ navamasyeva veda cedaviruddhatā ||

That the inner Self is one's [true] Self [is known] by cancelling [the notion] 'I am suffering', just as [the man who had counted only] nine comes to know the tenth [from the words 'you are']; so there is no contradiction.

Meaning today and context

Like the man who counted everyone but himself, we search for ourselves among the things we observe. Being told what we already are can end the search in an instant.

Shankaracharya recalls the story of the tenth man: ten travellers each counted the others, got nine, and mourned the 'lost' tenth, until someone told the counter 'You are the tenth.'
