nityamuktatvavijñānaṃ vākyādbhavati nānyataḥ | vākyārthasyāpi vijñānaṃ padārthasmṛtipūrvakam ||

The knowledge that one is eternally free comes from the [scriptural] sentence and from nothing else; and knowing the meaning of the sentence is preceded by recalling the meanings of its words.

Meaning today and context

For Shankara, freedom is not manufactured by effort; it is recognised when a true teaching is clearly understood. That is why careful study of what the words mean matters.

Shankaracharya states the thesis of this section: knowledge of freedom comes from the scriptural sentence, and depends on first understanding its words.
