Upadeshasahasri 18.189

18.189 Shankaracharya

anvayavyatirekābhyāṃ padārthaḥ smaryate dhruvam | evaṃ nirduḥkhamātmānamakriyaṃ pratipadyate ||

Through agreement and difference the meaning of the word is surely recalled; in this way one comes to know the Self as free of suffering and free of action.

Meaning today and context

Notice what is present in every state, waking, dream and sleep, and what appears in one and vanishes in another. Pain and activity come and go; the awareness that sees them does not.

Shankaracharya explains how the word 'thou' is understood: by the method of agreement and difference (anvaya-vyatireka), separating what stays constant from what comes and goes.
