Upadeshasahasri 18.191

18.191 Shankaracharya

prabodhena yathā svāpnaṃ sarvaṃ duḥkhaṃ nivartate | pratyagātmadhiyā tadvadduḥkhitvaṃ sarvadātmanaḥ ||

As on waking all the suffering of a dream ceases, so through knowledge of the inner Self the Self's [seeming] state of suffering ceases for ever.

This is about the sense of self, not a reason to dismiss real pain, grief or illness. Seek care and treatment; if you are in crisis, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Much of our suffering lives in the story 'I am the one who suffers'. Seeing that you are the awareness in which pain appears is like waking up: the pain may still be met and treated, but it no longer defines who you are.

Shankaracharya draws the conclusion of the dream example: knowledge of the inner Self ends suffering the way waking ends a dream.
