Upadeshasahasri 18.193

18.193 Shankaracharya

vākye tattvamasītyasmiñjñātārthaṃ tadasidvayam | tvamarthasmṛtyasāhāyyādvākyaṃ notpādayetpramām ||

In the sentence 'Thou art That', the meanings of the pair 'That' and 'art' are [already] known; [but] without the help of a [clear] recollection of the meaning of 'thou', the sentence would not produce valid knowledge.

Meaning today and context

The hardest word in 'You are That' is 'you'. Until you are clear about what 'you' really refers to, beyond body, roles and moods, the teaching cannot land.

Shankaracharya explains why the great sentence needs the meaning of 'thou' to be clarified first.
