Upadeshasahasri 18.194

18.194 Shankaracharya

तत्त्वमोस्तुल्यनीडार्थमसीत्येतत्पदं भवेत् । तच्छब्दः प्रत्यगात्मार्थस्तच्छब्दार्थस्त्वमस्तथा ॥

tattvamostulyanīḍārthamasītyetatpadaṃ bhavet | tacchabdaḥ pratyagātmārthastacchabdārthastvamastathā ||

The word 'art' serves to show that 'That' and 'thou' rest on the same ground; the word 'That' means the inner Self, and the word 'thou' likewise means what 'That' means.

'असि' पद यह दिखाता है कि 'तत्' और 'त्वम्' का आधार एक ही है; 'तत्' शब्द का अर्थ अन्तरात्मा है, और 'त्वम्' शब्द का अर्थ भी वही है जो 'तत्' का है।

The teaching does not say you are like the ultimate or a part of it; it says the reality behind 'you' and behind 'That' is one.

यह शिक्षा यह नहीं कहती कि आप परम के समान हैं या उसका अंश हैं; यह कहती है कि 'तू' के पीछे और 'वह' के पीछे की सत्ता एक ही है।

Shankaracharya analyses the grammar of 'Thou art That': the verb 'art' places the two words on one and the same reality.
