Upadeshasahasri 18.195

18.195 Shankaracharya

duḥkhitvāpratyagātmatvaṃ vārayetāmubhāvapi | evaṃ ca netinetyarthaṃ gamayetāṃ parasparam ||

The two [words] together ward off [in 'thou'] the state of suffering and [in 'That'] the state of not being the inner Self; and in this way, each through the other, they convey the meaning 'not this, not this'.

Two mistakes are cleared at once: that you are only a small suffering person, and that the ultimate is somewhere far away. What remains is neither of these pictures.

Shankaracharya shows how the two words correct each other: 'That' removes the idea that 'you' are a sufferer, and 'thou' removes the idea that 'That' is something distant from you.
