Upadeshasahasri 18.196

18.196 Shankaracharya

evaṃ tattvamasītyasya gamyamāne phale katham | apramāṇatvamasyoktvā kriyāpekṣatvamucyate ||

When the result [liberation] is thus understood from 'Thou art That', how can [anyone] call it not a means of valid knowledge and say that it depends on some action?

Meaning today and context

If understanding itself brings the freedom, nothing further has to be done to earn it. The work is to understand, not to add a ritual on top.

Against the Mimamsakas, who hold that a sentence is authoritative only as part of an injunction to act, Shankaracharya asks how they can deny that 'Thou art That' is a means of knowledge.
