Salutation to the lord of ascetics, of vast understanding, weightier even than [my] teacher, who protected the treasure of the Veda's meaning, crushing the enemies of scripture a hundred times over with the swords of his words, armed with arguments hard as thunderbolts.

The tradition honours those who preserved and explained a teaching, not only those who first spoke it.
A benediction: Shankaracharya salutes a revered master of ascetics, weightier even than his own teacher (traditionally taken as Gaudapada, his teacher's teacher), who defended the meaning of the Veda against its critics.
