Upadeshasahasri 18.200

18.200 Shankaracharya

svasaṃvedyatvaparyāyaḥ svapramāṇaka iṣyatām | nivṛttāvahamaḥ siddhaḥ svātmano'nubhavaśca naḥ ||

Let [the Self] be accepted as its own proof, which is another way of saying it is self-known; when the 'I' [the ego-notion] falls away, our experience of our own Self is [simply] established.

Meaning today and context

You never need evidence that you are aware; awareness is what makes evidence possible. What hides it is not absence but the busy 'I' laid over it.

Shankaracharya explains why knowledge of the Self is direct: the Self is self-evident and needs no other proof.
