Upadeshasahasri 18.201

18.201 Shankaracharya

buddhīnāṃ viṣayo duḥkhaṃ tā yasya viṣayā matāḥ | kuto'sya duḥkhasaṃbandho dṛśeḥ syātpratyagātmanaḥ ||

Suffering is an object of the intellects; and those [intellects] are held to be objects of him [the Self]. How then could he, the inner Self who is pure seeing, have any connection with suffering?

This concerns identity, not a reason to ignore pain, depression or illness. Real suffering deserves care and treatment; if you are in crisis, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Pain shows up in the mind, and the mind shows up in awareness. Seeing this does not make pain unreal, but it gives a place to stand that the pain does not own: you are the one who sees the hurt, not only the hurt.

Shankaracharya argues that suffering cannot touch the inner Self: suffering is an object of the mind, and the mind itself is an object of the Self.
