dṛśirevānubhūyeta svenaivānubhavātmanā | tadābhāsatayā janma dhiyo'syānubhavaḥ smṛtaḥ ||

Seeing [pure awareness] alone is experienced, by its own nature as experience. The arising of the intellect as its reflection is what is called its 'experience'.

Meaning today and context

Every thought and feeling is lit by an awareness that is not itself a thought or feeling. Moods are like reflections in water; the light they borrow is yours.

Shankaracharya explains what we call 'experience': the mind lights up with a reflection of pure awareness.
