Upadeshasahasri 18.203

18.203 Shankaracharya

aśanāyādinirmuktaḥ siddho mokṣastvameva saḥ | śrotavyādi tavetyetadviruddhaṃ kathamucyate ||

Free from hunger and the rest, you yourself are that liberation, already accomplished. How then can it be said, 'You must hear [reflect and meditate]'? That is contradictory.

Meaning today and context

You are not trying to become something you are not; you are trying to see what you already are. That changes practice from straining for a prize into recognising a fact.

Shankaracharya takes up the Upanishadic instruction 'the Self should be heard, reflected on, meditated on' and asks how it can be a command if liberation is already one's nature.
