Upadeshasahasri 18.208

18.208 Shankaracharya

siddho mokṣastvamityetadvastumātraṃ pradarśyate | śrotustathātvavijñāne pravṛttiḥ syātkathaṃ tviti ||

[Objection:] 'You are liberation, already accomplished': this only points out the thing as it is. How then would the hearer be moved to strive to know that it is so?

Meaning today and context

If nothing has to be done, why seek at all? The next verse answers: because we do not yet feel it to be true.

An objection is raised: if the teaching only states a fact, why would anyone make an effort to understand it?
