Upadeshasahasri 18.21

18.21 Shankaracharya

so'dhyāso neti netīti prāptavatpratiṣidhyate | bhūyo'dhyāsavidhiḥ kaścitkutaścinnopapadyate ||

That superimposition is negated by 'not this, not this' as though it had really been there; no further injunction of [another] superimposition is possible from any source.

Meaning today and context

The method is subtraction: set aside, one by one, what you are not. Nothing new needs to be put in its place.

Shankaracharya explains 'not this, not this': it negates the superimposition as though it were really there, and no further injunction is needed.
