Upadeshasahasri 18.210

18.210 Shankaracharya

tadvijñānāya yuktyādi kartavyaṃ śrutirabravīt | kartṛtvādyanuvādena siddhatvānubhavāya tu ||

For knowing that [already accomplished state], the Upanishad said that reasoning and the rest are to be done, restating [the seeker's sense of] being a doer and so on, but only so that he may experience [his] accomplished state.

Meaning today and context

Study, reflection and meditation are not ways of manufacturing freedom; they meet you where you are, as someone who feels like a doer, and help you see what was always the case.

Shankaracharya explains why the Upanishad prescribes reasoning, reflection and so on, even though liberation is not produced.
