Upadeshasahasri 18.211

18.211 Shankaracharya

nirduḥkho niṣkriyo'kāmaḥ siddho mokṣo'hamityapi | gṛhītvaiva viruddhārthamādadhyātkathameva saḥ ||

Having taken in [the teaching] 'I am free of suffering, actionless, without desire, liberation already accomplished', how indeed can he hold it, when he grasps it as the opposite [of his experience]?

Meaning today and context

It is natural to hear 'you are free' and think 'but that is not what I feel'. The text takes that gap seriously instead of brushing it aside.

Shankaracharya voices the student's difficulty: the teaching contradicts what he actually feels.
