Upadeshasahasri 18.213

18.213 Shankaracharya

ihaiva ghaṭate praśno na muktatvānubhūtaye | pramāṇena virodhī yaḥ so'trārthaḥ praśnamarhati ||

Here indeed the question is fitting, but not [as a request] for the experience of being free. What conflicts with a valid means of knowledge is the matter that deserves a question here.

Meaning today and context

The thing to question is not your freedom but the feeling of bondage. Turn the inquiry onto the belief 'I am limited' and ask what it rests on.

Shankaracharya says the student's question is legitimate, but it is about his sense of bondage, not about liberation.
