This [knowledge] 'I am free' is born of another means of knowledge [scripture]: 'Thou art Being.' The state of suffering, since it springs from a [mere] semblance of perception, is what deserves to be questioned.
Calling suffering a 'semblance' is about the sense of self, not a denial of anyone's pain. If you are struggling, seek help; Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
The certainty 'I suffer' feels like plain fact, but it is an appearance worth examining. What looks obvious is not always what is true.
Shankaracharya contrasts the two notions: freedom is known from scripture, while the sense of suffering comes from a mere semblance of perception.
