What is asked, what is longed for and what must be answered is the absence of suffering that he desires: 'How can this suffering of mine cease completely?'

Behind every spiritual question is a simple human one: how can this pain end? A good teacher answers that question, not a clever side-issue.
Shankaracharya states what the student's question really seeks: not information, but the end of suffering.
