Upadeshasahasri 18.217

18.217 Shankaracharya

tasmādātmavimuktatvaṃ pratyāyayati tadvacaḥ | vaktavyaṃ tu tathārthaṃ syādvirodhe'sati kenacit ||

Therefore that statement makes known that the Self is free; and what is said should be taken in that sense, as long as nothing [valid] contradicts it.

Meaning today and context

Let the teaching mean what it says, 'you are free', unless something truly disproves it. A passing mood of bondage is not such a disproof.

Shankaracharya concludes that the great sentence teaches the Self's freedom and should be taken at its word.
