ito'nyo'nubhavaḥ kaścidātmano nopapadyate | avijñātaṃ vijānatāṃ vijñātāramiti śruteḥ ||
No other experience of the Self than this is possible, for the Upanishads say: '[It is] not known by those who [think they] know' and '[you cannot know] the knower [of knowing]'.
Meaning today and context
Do not wait for the Self to appear as a special vision or sensation. The knower cannot become one more thing known; it is what knows every experience.
Shankaracharya cites the Upanishads (Kena 2.3; Brihadaranyaka 3.4.2) to show that the Self cannot be experienced as an object.
