Upadeshasahasri 18.22

18.22 Shankaracharya

ātmanīha yathādhyāsaḥ pratiṣedhastathaiva ca | malādhyāsaniṣedhau khe kriyete ca yathābudhaiḥ ||

Here, superimposition on the Self and its negation happen just as the unwise superimpose dirt on the sky and [then] deny it.

The Self being unstained is not a reason to ignore harm one has done; owning mistakes and making amends still matter. If guilt or shame feels unbearable, talk to someone or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The sky only looks dusty; nothing ever stains it. Our sense of being stained by the past is like that.

Shankaracharya gives the example of the sky: the ignorant think the sky is dirty and are then told it is not; so too superimposition on the Self and its negation.
